Shadow shot Sunday --- Santa Fe

I had to go back into the archives for this weeks shadow shots. Both of these photos were taken last fall during our Last Hurrah trip out west, when we stopped in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

This great gate and its shadow were just off the courtyard of one of the old Catholic churches near the town square. The name of the church escapes me at present.

I captured the Old Salt and these great shadows on the sidewalk outside the Presbyterian Church just a few blocks form the church in the first shot.

Shadow Shot Sunday --- arched back

I posted all but one of the decorations in my yard, last Thursday, on the meme Yard Art Thursday. I saved this one to post on Shadow Shot Sunday because of the great shadow I captured of it. Below is two snaps of the shadow and one that gives you the source of the shadow.

Have a great week everyone. I hope you are all ready for next weeks onslaught of trick-or-treater's and that your neighborhood has only good little ghost and goblins wandering your streets.

Shadow Shot Sunday --- birthday sisters visit

I've mentioned before that I share my birthday with a sister who lives in Omaha. My nieces were on fall break this week, so my birthday sister and her family made a surprise visit home for a few days. Thursday night a bunch of my siblings and their children gathered at the local Pasta House for dinner and a brief visit with my sister. Friday morning the Old Salt and I accompanied my birthday sister and her family on a scenic drive to the little town of Augusta with the intention of spending the day apple picking. However the apple season had already ended and we ended up visiting a pumpkin patch instead.

We had a great time in the fields, mazes and playgrounds with my nieces and enjoyed some beautiful weather and catching up with my mother, sister and BIL. While downloading my photos earlier today I discovered that I had also captured some great pictures to share with Tracy and all of her friends over at Shadow Shot Sunday.

As this photo shows, not all of the country roads around here are paved. And, some of them have such large trees beside them that it is like driving into a tunnel of shadows.

On the playgrounds of the pumpkin patch was this old fort looking area. The fence was a great place to capture some shadows.

Not only were there shadows on the fence, the fence also made some fantastic shadows around the slides.

If you will click this photo and blow it up you will be amazed at all the hidden shadows it contains. How many different areas can you count?

shadow Shot Sunday --- # lady Liberty

Welcome one and all to this week's edition of Shadow Shot Sunday.

This week I have a guessing game for you. Can you name what is making this shadow? If not, then proceed to the second photo to get your answer.

Well, what is your guess? The correct answer is a young man dressed as the Statue of Liberty.

This young man has been doing a great job of jumping and dancing, all over the parking area beside the roadway of the busiest business area in town. For two reasons, to keep from getting frost bite in the coldest winter of the last
nine years and to attract customers to the Liberty Tax Service. For several months I have been amazed by his ability to stay so cheerful and active. The other day I finally pulled over and ask to take his picture and was surprised by the shadow shots I found when I got home
.

Shadow Shot Sunday -- scallops on pebbles

Welcome one and all to this weeks edition of Shadow Shot Sunday.

This week I have a guessing game for you. Can you name what is making this shadow? If not then proceed to the second photo to get your answer. These shadow shots were taken in Albuquerque at the Balloon Fiesta. But, that is not a clue. The place or event has nothing to do with the answer.

Well, what is your guess? The correct answer is the plastic fence that was keeping Fiesta goers from wandering into the wrong places.

shadow Shot Sunday -- on the dock

Welcome everyone to Shadow Shot Sunday. I hope there has been lots of sun in your week.

This week I sharing a few of the shots I took recently while on vacation in San Francisco. These captures were made on the dock at the embarcadero as we waited for the ferry to take us to Sausalito.

Lets start with the delicate shadows this plant left on the column they were planted in.

The area was full of birds hoping to score from diners at the many sidewalk cafes.

This shadow of this fire hydrant wearing its cone cap reminded me of one of the gnomes in my neighbors garden.

This was one of our fellow passengers waiting on line for the ferry.

If I would not have had to tote it around all day I would have purchased this mug as a gift for the the Old Salt from one of the sidewalk vendors.

Shadow Shot Sunday -- odd shadows

Shadow Shot Sunday has arrived once again. This week I have an odd mixture of shadows captured over the last few weeks.

First we have the headless shadows of a couple of folks who where waiting in line to take a tram ride during the Senior Trail Day event held at our riverfront park this week for the elderly and disabled by the Rotary Club.

These next two shots were captured at the swimming pool during our recent family reunion. I'm not sure you will be able to identify the source of shadows though. I will enlighten you at the end.

This is the source of the first shadow. The second one is the shadow of the lifeguard tower. I failed to photograph the tower.

Shadow Shot Sunday -- reunion shadows

Sunday has once again arrived and with it comes the best of our shadow shots. My shots this week were taken at my family reunion that was held last weekend.

You could not ask for a more perfect place to hold our reunion. This year we had perfect weather as well. Lots of sunshine and therefore lots of shadows to capture along with all the fun.

This first shot is of the Old Salt. He is covered in stripes provided by the pergola beside the pool.

The third photo will show you the source of the first two.

This last shot not only has the tree shadows on the ground but the reflections (or water shadows) of the trees, canoes and other items around the water.

Click to enlarge the last two shots. There is more detail than meets the eye on first glance.

Shadow Shot Sunday -- the fence

My gosh, its Sunday again. I can't believe how fast the weeks go since I discovered memes. Now the days are no longer known by the traditional calendar days. Instead, they are now called ruby, mellow yellow, or you get the point. Now it is time for Shadow Shots.

I had a different set of pics put aside for today and just had to change my plans. The Old Salt and I were on a scouting mission today that took us out into the country. We were driving along by a wooden fence that seemed to be a mile long. I was admiring the angles the fence took and the weathered paint when suddenly I noticed the shadows.

I yelled "STOP" and the Old Salt being a good sailor said "stop, aye" and found a place to pull over. I think I was out of the car and snapping shots before he even knew why we stopped. I made this collage of a few of the shadows.

Posted by Picasa

Now like Paul Harvey, I will give you the rest of the story. Of course the shadows were on one side of the fence but I found what was behind the fence to be just as interesting. There was the fence itself followed by a nice mowed strip. Then I noticed there were several large fields beautifully laid out of Soybeans surrounded by more mowed patches. Then beyond the fields was............ well just see for yourself.

Shadow Shot Sunday ---# 64-- Silo Lane

Hi All, welcome to Shadow Shot Sunday.

The weather here in the heartland has been warm and sunny; perfect for taking great shadow shots . I have been snapping pictures like crazy. In the last few weeks I have taken oodles of photos of church picnic's, birthday parties, new babies and of course the local fair. But not a decent shadow shot among them. So I had to pull one out of my archives. I took this shot one day last fall when the Old Salt and I took a drive in the country.

For one reason or another I resisted using it for SSS. A few months ago I met someone who told me the legend of the silo, and ever since I've been waiting for the right time to tell the story of this old silo. But first, take a second look at this shot and you will see the silo in the background. It is not your average silo. Plus, it has quite a history. It was once part of a large family farm and sat beside a dairy barn. For many generations family members filled the silo with grain to feed the cows that were milked in the barn. Then the time came when the children didn't want to follow their father into the family business. Times got hard and the farmer got old. To make ends meet, the farmer sold off parts of the farm. First the livestock went, then the fields were leased. Finally, he started to sell an acre here and an acre there. When the farmer died there was not much left of his farm. A few acres with an old house and dilapidated barn and silo. It was sold to a builder who subdivided the land and built houses on it. That old silo kept calling to the builder and so he decided that since it sat near the road he would just leave it where it was and call the road leading to the homes, "Silo Lane."

Silo Lane is now gravel and the old silo still sits in the front yard of the first house on the lane just like it has for the last fifty odd years. Something about that old Silo must still be calling to people because it has never been torn down. Or maybe it is just that you can't live on Silo Lane without a real silo.

OK, I left out part of the story. The builder lived in that first house. When his kids got old enough to play outside alone he decided to do something with that old silo. He added windows and a door. Then came a spiral staircase and some flooring to create a four story playhouse for his children. He topped it all off by adding a lookout window in the roof of the tower, so his kids could be anything they wanted to be. And they were. The boys became the defenders of the Alamo one day and the knights in a castle the next. While the girls might be Ripunzel with flowing hair waiting for Prince Charming or dolls in their own lifesized doll house.

Shadow Shot Sunday ---# 63 Praying Mantis

Welcome to another week of Shadow Shot Sunday. You never know where you will find a good shadow shot, and sometimes they find you. That is the case with my entry today.

What I thought was going to be a quick stop at Radio Shack turned into a rather lengthy photo session when I noticed a large praying mantis climbing the window beside the door. I recently purchased my first macro lens, and I wanted to see what it could do with this giant bug. As I snapped away the bug moved across the window over a streach of wall and up the the next window.

When I got home and downloaded the shots I found that the one on the window had a nice refection and the one on the wall had a nice shadow. You can see the green wing in the reflection. If you enlarge the photo you may see that the reflection looks more like a charcoal drawing than a mirror image.

First is a shot of the praying mantis and then the shadow shots. Enjoy.

Shadow Shot Sunday ---# 62 visit to the park

Welcome to Shadow Shot Sunday. The day we share the shadows that were a part of our week.

Taking advantage of the end of season sales at the garden shop I purchased a set of matching flower pots and set them on the patio. I noticed that the shadow produced by the chimney of our fire pit, the deck support post and the pots was interesting and grabed the camera. Once I was added to the shot we had what appears to be a city of skyscrapers, don't you think?

On Friday, the Old Salt and I had the good fortune of being substitute babysitters for the children of our next door neighbors. This next shot was taken during an outing to the part with the children. Can you guess what it is?

I cropped the shadow from the following shot. One of our charges was swinging on his stomach and the action made this very unique shadow.
