pink windows

Last May during our visit to Plattsmouth, Nebraska I photograph these pink trimmed windows of a restaurant on Main Street.  I believe the restaurant was named "Mom Cafe and Catering Company."  The front of the building was painted cream with bold pink trim.   While some of the quotes on these windows could relate to our current economic troubles  I had a feeling they were not new or  those of the owner so I did some research and found that they go back to the years between WW1 and WW2.

"Help bring back Prosperity" 

In 1920, Republican presidential candidate Warren Harding  promised "less government in business and more business in government" to help bring back prosperity after the recession and inflation that followed World War I.  

"Buy Locally....Give work to your Neighbor."  

This has been a reoccurring mantra since WW1 and I could not find anything that contributed it to any one person.  I did find auto advertising posters on E-bay using this quote as early as 1930.

"Bright Dreams- Hard Times"  

The above refers to a Historical Program held in Plattsmouth in June of of 2009 entitled "Bright Dreams-Hard Times: America in the Thirties." During this historical entertainment five well known scholars preformed appearing as Huey Long, Will Rogers, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Zora Neale Hurston and Aimee Semple McPherson telling their life stories and how they influenced depression era life in Plattsmouth.
