Dothan Murals 3

I have an Aunt that lives in Dothan, Alabama and we visit her almost yearly.  During my trip last  May I photographed half of the twenty colorfully and boldly painted murals that tell the history of the Wiregrass region on buildings throughout the downtown area of Dothan.

Camp Recovery

This mural is dedicated to the recuperation area for soldiers taken ill.  Camp Recovery was set up on a high bluff overlooking the river three miles southeast of Fort Scott.  

Tribute to Sherman Rose and the Tuskegee Airmen

this mural pays tribute to the ten black students who were the first class in the civilian Pilot Training Program at the Tuskegee Institute in 1939.  Sherman rose became the only black flight instructor at Fort Rucker, a position he served until 1974

I have been hearing the term Wiregrass for years, but, never knew what that meant.  After seeing it in all the descriptions of these murals I decided to google it.  What I learned was that " The Wiregrass Region  is an area of the Southern United States encompassing parts of southern Georgia, southeastern Alabama, and the Florida Panhandle. The region is named for the native Aristida stricta, commonly known as "wiregrass” due to its texture. "
