Ruby Tuesday and Rednesday --- chicken

Last week the Old Salt and I took a mini vacation and went to visit one of my brothers at his cabin on Table Rock Lake near Branson, Missouri. This trip is about a four hour drive for us and we got a late start, so, about half way we starting searching for someplace to stop for lunch.

Our GPS gave a list of about six restaurants in the area and the Old Salt choose one because he liked the name. We followed the directions the woman's voice was giving us and soon heard the familiar "You have reached your destination" come from the Tom Tom. We pulled to the curb and started to look around and all we could see in the area was an abandoned stone foundation poking out of overgrown weeds. Apparently, no one had bothered to tell the folks at Tom Tom that this eatery had burned down quite some time ago.

We began to back track to the interstate and suddenly there was this large chicken on the horizon parked beside a gas station. Somehow we had missed it on the trip down that road. Of course we had to pullover so I could get a photo for this weeks memes that feature the color red.

It only took a minute to realize we were in the parking lot of the "Cookin from Scratch" restaurant in the small town of Doolittle, Missouri. We had found our lunch site. Now, this restaurant was short on ambiance but it was very clean and almost every table was full of locals so we settled in for lunch. Turns out that the food lived up to the name. It was definitely made from scratch and tasted as if we were back home sitting at the table of the best cook in the family, my sister Nancy. There were four items on the special board and it was certainly a hard choice. But, I ended up choosing the meatloaf dinner while the Old Salt went with the ham n' beans.

We are already trying to come up with a reason to travel that way again soon, so that we can stop at the home of the chicken riding in the red El Camino. I suggest that if you ever get that way you do the same.

I am linking this post to Ruby Tuesday and Rednesday.
